This meant that a maxed ranged/magic player (let’s just say with 99 defense or 99 ranged/maged), could be level 100-110, while the medee player at its maximum is around level 120. These numbers aren't adjusted to reflect prayer or hitpoints. This could allow Ranged or Magic players to have a significant advantage over Melee players in PvP settings.

The next update is the Evolution of Combat update, that skips 8 years. This update changes the balance of the battle triangle. The combat cl****es are not "arguably identical" however they are clearly balanced. Jagex developers decided that the formula 138 (the highest level of combat that was raised from 126 and 138 with Summoning) formula should be dropped and that the present or past (depending on how far in the future this formula was to be read) combat formula would be used. The 200 formula applies to all cl****es equally. For instance, a player who has 99 Ranged and 99 Defence would be at the same level of combat as a player who has 99 Magic and 99 Defence. Problem fixed, right?

Pretty much. The 200 system isn't perfect (the biggest issue with it is that prayer isn't considered) but it is superior to the previous system in scaling players. But the 200 calculation suffered from something it could not avoid: nostalgia.
