It's fun to develop your own Shrek-adjacent goal monster with a closet packed with silly hats but when your progression is tied to your in-game rating, you're incentivised to perform dispossessing skill move actions that even Saint Maximin wouldn't spend time on.
Unfortunately, FIFA's street-football vehicle, Volta, suffers a similar fate. The proof is in the new 'Take Flight' Signature Ability that transforms you into an aerial expert. Because the power relies upon working together and crossing the ball, most will just choose Power Strike and haphazardly smack the ball following a giddy run.
The positive is that EA was listening to my pleas for an improved Volta Arcade, so I fully credit the fact that it has now been expanded to include the more realistic battle royale mode of fun minigames, and obstacle courses that are reminiscent of the best of Fall Guys. It's still a bit risible for it to be only offered on Saturdays, however.
Quelle surprise! Ultimate Team has received the most attention, and the team training mode I've long been searching for has finally appeared in the form of FUT Moments. Moments is a small-sized portion of FIFA gameplay in the form of fun challenges that are designed to challenge your physical shape and find out how the various cards can work together.
The game is still in its early stages however, there's a huge opportunity to document the careers of players as well as recreate unforgettable moments of football's history through this mode. The current game includes highlights from the golden years that included Jurgen Klopp and Kylian Mbappe. In the next game, it'll be fascinating to see what EA's team will do with other football legends such as Pele and "King" Kazuyoshi Miura.
There are also sweeping changes to the chemical system. Chemistry does not have to be influenced by a player's place in the formation in relation to other players, a change that enables more diversity in leagues and nations. I'm not sure if it will influence the way that people think about their strategy, but it's nice knowing that you can throw in wildcard players and find more ways in connecting them with top division players.
Finding the ideal midfielder to hit that coveted "33" chemistry, feels similar to a Squad Building Challenge now, which feels intentional. The Squad Building Challenges can be an ideal way to pass an hour doing nothing. However, EA's'sudoku for football nerds' is best played with the app that comes with it, away from Ultimate Team's unresponsive console menus.
A dark hint of the football game licensing wars that are to follow, FIFA has lost the J1 League license this year and that meant there was no King Kazu. The result was the team to change direction and become the exciting Bronze and Silver Australian A League team and features the terrifying strike force of Hibs winger Martin Boyle and the aptly named David Ball. Much like last time my underdog team triggered several rage outbursts from rivals sporting million-coin outfits which exposed Ultimate Team as a gilded farce.
