Diablo Immortal isn't much worse than a free-to play Diablo could be. It's true that the game is a constant assault on your moment with a multitude of microtransactions that come in all kinds of inscrutable currencies. You'll need to work until you win even if you decide not to make a purchase in the game. And your reward for all is a sloppy duplicated version of Diablo II's story.
But, for all its faults, I ultimately liked Diablo Immortal more than I hated it. It's still got everything that makes the series enjoyable with its thrilling gameplay, its wide-ranging character customization as well as its strong sense of place, to its endless supply of fascinating loot. Indeed, Diablo Immortal even has some interesting gameplay twists which I hope Blizzard retains when they release Diablo IV.
If you worried that F2P mechanics would undercut Diablo Immortal Your fears were justifiable. The game's control system is quite different depending the game's platform, mobile or PC, but all the core concepts are the identical. You'll grab a quest in town, venture out into the wilderness, press or tap repeatedly to fight enemies, occasionally engaging special abilities or sipping an elixir of healing. The battle isn't very deep but it's a lot of fun and requires a bit of strategic thinking, especially when you're surrounded by the demon hordes and need to balance special cooldowns to abilities as well as your supply of potions.
Diablo Immortal's gameplay fundamentals are in essence, the same as the one you've played in the previous three Diablo games. Because Diablo is a game that can be played on mobile devices in the main, actions seem a little less specific, character building is somewhat less detailed and there's a general sense that the game allows you an abundance of freedom to adjust to the touch controls. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though, as the difficulty still ramps up with time.
