Amphetamines inhibit the hypotensive effect of veratrum alkaloids
Veratrum alkaloids, also known as veratrine and veratradon, belong to the lily family, Melanthiaceae. They are found in various species of the plant. Their primary pharmacologic action is to stimulate the inhibition of the heart rate by the Bezold-Jarisch reflex (BJR). This reflex is characterized as a pharmacologic response.
BJR has been investigated in both normal and abnormal conditions. The mechanism triggering the response is not well defined. It is believed that the stimulus for BJR is mediated through afferent pathways, which interact with the baroreceptors.
