Canada's job situation is in flux. Employment levels rose in March 2024, with job postings at their lowest since the COVID-19 epidemic. This blog post will go deeper into these trends and explain their implications for both job seekers and businesses.

Employment is rising.

The most recent figures from Statistics Canada show a rising job market. Payroll employment, which counts the number of employees getting pay and benefits, rose by 51,400 in March. This represents a 0.3% increase over February, bringing the total year-over-year gain to a solid 232,100 jobs (or 1.3%).

There's also good news for workers! In March, average weekly wages rose by 4.2% year on year to $1,235.68. While month-over-month earnings were relatively unchanged, the aggregate trend points to a favorable picture for worker remuneration.

Healthcare and Education Lead the Charge

The job growth was not evenly dispersed across all sectors. The healthcare and social assistance sectors emerged as champions, adding 11,700 jobs (+0.5%). Since September 2022, this industry has been on a constant increasing track, with a cumulative gain of almost 144,300 jobs, representing a stunning 6.5% growth. Educational services also showed a considerable increase of 8,100 jobs (+0.6%) over the previous month.

This expansion was driven by primary and secondary schools, as well as universities and colleges. Manufacturing also bounced back in March, creating 7,300 jobs and more than offsetting February's losses. The construction sector contributed a slight rise of 2,600 jobs, continuing its upward trend.

Positive Employment Growth Amid Changing Vacancies

Recent employment data portray a positive picture for Canada's job market, but with an unexpected twist. In March, job openings fell by 40,600 positions (down 6.2% month on month), bringing the total to 610,700.

This is the most significant month-over-month fall since September 2023. Year on year, employment openings have decreased by 192,800 positions, or 24%. As a result, the employment vacancy rate fell to 3.4%, its lowest level since March 2020.

These trends point to a potential shift in Canada's dynamic work market. The increase in employment, along with a decrease in job openings, indicates a tightening labor market. For job searchers, this means a more competitive environment, which might motivate them to polish their talents and offer their best self to potential employers.
