Acute encephalitis.
Acute encephalitis is a clinical and often pathological diagnosis. Most cases are herpes simplex virus encephalitis, and these can be diagnosed accurately from clinical grounds. More subtle less well recognised forms can be associated with many of the paraneoplastic and post-infectious encephalitides.
