Warner Bros. Secures 'On the Ropes' Rights – New Film

Exciting film project inspired by 'On the Ropes' to spotlight amateur boxers in Bedford-Stuyvesant, directed by Brad Silberling.

A compelling new film project is on the horizon, inspired by the documentary "On the Ropes," which spotlights the lives of amateur boxers in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

Warner Bros. has secured the rights to transform this documentary into a feature film, under the direction of Brad Silberling, with the screenplay penned by Ann Peacock, an Emmy-winning writer known for "A Prayer Before Dying."

The deal, valued in the mid-six-figure range, encompasses both the story rights and the life rights of the individuals featured in the documentary. Silberling will collaborate with his partner Barry Isaacson from Reveal Entertainment, alongside Bobby Newmyer, Jeffrey Silver, and Scott Strauss from Outlaw Productions to bring this project to life.

The documentary itself, created by directors Nanette Burstein and Brett Morgen, chronicles the journey of a former boxer who, after falling victim to drugs and crime, seeks redemption by mentoring young fighters in his Brooklyn gym. The film dives deep into the lives of three promising athletes, each with their own struggles mirroring those of their trainer.

Among these young boxers is a talented contender on the verge of greatness, a troubled teen at risk of losing his way, and a determined young woman who becomes the primary caregiver for her younger cousins after their mother succumbs to AIDS. This young woman, Tyrene Manson, faces heartbreaking challenges, including being wrongfully implicated in a drug raid linked to her uncle, also battling addiction and AIDS.

As she prepares for the prestigious Golden Gloves championship, an unexpected trial delays her opportunity, ultimately leading to her conviction despite scant evidence. The separation from her cousins during her incarceration adds to her plight.

Silberling plans to weave together elements from these narratives, focusing particularly on Tyrene's harrowing story while incorporating aspects from the other fighters' journeys in the film adaptation.“I’m looking to merge themes of loyalty and determination into the character of Tyrene,” Silberling expressed. “She embodies the resilience reminiscent of my mentor Marty Ritt’s ‘Norma Rae,’ showcasing incredible strength against the odds.”

In the storyline, Tyrene transforms into an ambitious fighter, grappling with the allure of promoters urging her to go professional, which would mean leaving her trainer and companion behind. “This film beautifully illustrates the human spirit, demonstrating how individuals can triumph over significant challenges,” Silberling remarked. He is also in competition with other directors for the opportunity to helm “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.” Meanwhile, he has plans for his next project, “Baby’s in Black,” which is set to potentially begin filming in June, featuring Susan Sarandon as the only confirmed cast member.

Warner Bros. is overseeing the project, led by Courtenay Valenti.

Matthew Perry’s New Venture with Franchise: Following his successful collaboration with Bruce Willis in the hit comedy “The Whole Nine Yards,” Matthew Perry has entered into an agreement with Franchise that may pave the way for him to star in upcoming projects from chairman and CEO Elie Samaha and president Andrew Stevens. He will be joining a roster of stars that includes Willis and Sylvester Stallone.

Despite several heavily promoted films like “Boiler Room” and “Reindeer Games” losing traction, “The Whole Nine Yards” has remained at the top of the box office for two consecutive weeks, grossing over $30 million. “Matthew is an exceptional talent with remarkable comedic skills and strong leading man presence,” Samaha noted.

Perry is currently reviewing scripts during his hiatus from “Friends,” anticipating that ongoing negotiations will result in an extension of the series. While gossip columns have speculated on a potential $600,000 per episode deal for the cast, insiders indicate that the final figures will hinge on whether the actors agree to return for a single season or two. If it’s the latter, the compensation is expected to increase. Perry is represented by CAA and his manager Doug Chapin.Wayne Wang is gearing up for his latest film, “The Center of the World,” which is poised to be a bold cinematic venture.

This project, described as highly provocative, will feature a compelling narrative about a day trader embroiled in a passionate affair with a stripper, leading to unforeseen consequences.

Peter Sarsgaard, known for his roles in “Boys Don’t Cry” and the upcoming “Unconditional Love,” is set to take on the role of the day trader.

Alongside him will be Molly Parker, an emerging talent who recently appeared in the indie film “Kissed” and has just wrapped filming on “Sunshine” with Ralph Fiennes.

Both actors are represented by prominent agencies, with Sarsgaard being handled by CAA and MJ Management’s Jon Rubinstein, while Parker is with William Morris.

The screenplay, penned by renowned writers Paul Auster and Siri Hustvedt, is scheduled to commence filming this spring, with Wang and Peter Newman producing, and Ira Deutchman and Greg Johnson serving as executive producers.

In a different realm of filmmaking, the duo of Greg Harrison and Danielle Renfrew, who gained acclaim for their film “Groove,” have recently partnered with William Morris agents John Burnham, David Lubliner, and Joel Lubin.

Harrison, who both wrote and directed “Groove,” along with producer Renfrew, plans to continue collaborating closely.

The Sundance Film Festival proved to be a turning point for them, as they experienced overwhelming interest from agents after a quieter reception the previous year.

Harrison reflected on the experience, saying, “We felt like deer caught in the headlights.”

The team is exploring their next project, a road trip script titled “Blue Sky Driving,” while also considering additional scripts.

“Groove” will have its first Los Angeles screening tonight at the Sony lot, marking an exciting moment for the filmmakers.
