Dilaudid is the brand name for hydromorphone hydrochloride, a strong opioid pain medication that comes in tablet and liquid form. It is used to treat moderate to severe pain that can’t be controlled with other medications. It is in a class of drugs called opioid analgesics, and it works by changing how the brain responds to pain. It is available only by prescription.

This drug can cause addiction and withdrawal symptoms if used regularly. In some cases, withdrawal can be life-threatening if not slowly weaned off of the medication.

The FDA recommends that patients wean off this medication under the care of a doctor. They may also want to use other medications for pain management as they transition off this drug. Some alternatives to this medication include acetaminophen (Tylenol), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and antidepressants.

In addition, it is recommended that people who have been taking this medication for a long period of time get regular medical checks to monitor for physical changes that could indicate dependence. Doctors should also be aware of any underlying health issues, such as liver or kidney problems, that could affect how the body processes this medication.

Like other narcotics, Dilaudid can slow breathing and lead to death if not taken correctly or if the dosage is too high. It can also cause a serious condition known as serotonin syndrome, which includes symptoms such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, fast heart rate, shivering, muscle stiffness or twitching, and loss of coordination. Call your doctor right away if you have any of these symptoms.

Your doctor will give you the dosage you need based on your condition and response to treatment. The medication can be taken by mouth orally or given into a vein through an injection. It is usually administered in the hospital or clinic. This medication can be addictive, so you should never share it with anyone.

You should tell your doctor if you have any allergies to this medicine or any other substances. You should also let them know if you have a history of depression, mental illness, Parkinson’s disease, gallbladder or pancreas problems, or trouble passing urine. This medication can interact with certain other medicines, such as MAO inhibitors (isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, and tranylcypromine).

Talk to your doctor about other ways to relieve pain when you’re taking this medication. For example, try to take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol).

This drug should not be used in pregnant women or by children. It can cause drowsiness and other side effects that can harm the unborn baby or infant. If you have to use Dilaudid during pregnancy, your doctor will monitor you closely for signs of dependence or withdrawal.

As you age, your body may not process this medication as well. It is especially important to avoid alcohol while taking this medication because it can increase the chances of dangerous side effects. If you are a senior, drink only small amounts of fluids to reduce the risk of dehydration and constipation.
